Description:
The Division of Bio-economics at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, KUL has considerable experience and a long tradition in research on global food value chains, private standards, and coordination and sustainability in food value chains. Within the research group Agricultural and Rural Development Economics these issues are studied from the perspective of how they affect low- and middle-income countries and the rural development process in these countries, with specific attention to pro-poor growth, market access, food security, gender and empowerment. These issues are investigated using mainly micro-economic approaches and state-of-the-art econometric techniques. The division has substantial expertise in micro-economic research on the local implications of participation in international trade in several African countries, including extensive research on horticultural exports in Senegal. The division includes some thirty junior and senior researchers, including researchers from different African countries. The division collaborates with research institutes from around the world, and from low- and middle-income countries in particular.
